The De La Salle Christian Brothers were founded in 1680 in France by St. John Baptist de La Salle to bring religious instruction and education to poor children who often had little hope for the future. Opposed by established society for insisting upon education regardless of ability to pay, and resented by the educational establishment for his innovative methods, De La Salle persevered and built a network of quality schools, integrated with religious instruction.
Over the years, the De La Salle Christian Brothers have brought their mission to 80 countries worldwide, including the United States. They have been active in the Long Island and New England area since the 19th century. In 1960, the De La Salle Christian Brothers Center in Narragansett, Rhode Island opened. It served three purposes: as a community of Brothers active in a variety of ministries; as the administrative offices for the Provincial/District Leaders; and a novitiate for training young men for the life of a Christian Brother.
